Ranma ½ was adapted into 161 TV episodes, three movies, and twelve OVAs. Everything was primarily animated by Studio Deen and all but the 12th OVA was produced by Kitty Films.
The television series debuted on Fuji TV's "Teens Golden Time" block on April 15, 1989[1] - it ran for eighteen episodes before being canceled. Following its cancellation, it was brought back as Ranma ½ Nettōhen (らんま½ 熱闘編 Ranma Nibun-no-Ichi Nettōhen?, "Ranma ½ Crazy Battle Compilation").[2]
Fourteen episodes were re-ordered - three episodes originally part of the initial Ranma broadcast were moved to Nettohen.
Viz Media licensed the TV series, the Movies, and most of the OVAs. Their releases go back to November 2, 1993.[3][4] Viz re-ordered certain episodes when they released them on VHS and DVD.
Remastered versions of the TV series, movies, and OVAs, titled Ranma ½: Digital Remaster Version (らんま½ デジタルリマスター版 Ranma Nibun-no-Ichi: Dejitaru Rimasutā Ban?) was made available on Blu-Ray Disc sets, Hulu, and Amazon. The remastered version of the TV series sorts the episodes in the order they were produced. Viz's latest DVD sets, Blu-Ray Disc sets, and streamed releases are based on this version.

1 | Big Trouble in Nekonron, China | November 2, 1991 | May 26, 1998 |
It's just another day at the Tendo Anything-Goes Martial Arts Training Hall - that is, until a strange girl named Lychee and her giant elephant Jasmine arrive to settle a score with lecherous martial arts master Happosai. Apparently, a very long time ago, Happosai gave Lychee's great-grandmother half of a legendary scroll guaranteed to bring happiness to whoever was holding it. The women of Lychee's family have been waiting for three generations now, and the prince still hasn't come - but of course, the moment Lychee lets the scroll out of her hands, the prince finally appears. Only now it's Ranma's reluctant fiancée Akane Tendo that's holding the scroll, and the long-awaited prince is only too ready to sweep his lucky bride off her feet. Now Ranma & Co. have no choice but to follow Prince Kirin's majestic flying barge all the way to Nekonron, China, where they find themselves in a showdown with the Seven Lucky Gods of martial arts. Released after episode 68.
2 | Nihao, My Concubine | August 1, 1992 | May 7, 1999 |
When poetry-spouting swordsman Tatewaki Kuno invites Ranma & Co. for a jaunt on his new luxury yacht, the last thing the group expects is a sudden storm to shipwreck them all on a deserted island. However, fixing the boat to get home soon becomes the least of their worries, as all the young girls in the group begin to disappear. As it turns out, they've been bride-napped by Prince Toma, the youthful ruler of the floating island, Togenkyo. Because of a magical spring which turns anything it touches instantly male, would-be bridegrooms have to kidnap girls...and in this case, Ranma's reluctant fiancee Akane is one of them. Released after episode 104.
3 | Team Ranma vs. the Legendary Phoenix | August 20, 1994 | November 21, 1995 |
Kuno purchases a phoenix egg. The merchant warns him never to put the nest and egg on his head, an idea so bizarre that Kuno is not concerned. But Ranma, not knowing the warning, puts the nest on Kuno's head as a joke. It hatches, it reverse-imprints onto the first person it sees, considering that person to be its enemy. Now stuck to Kuno's head, the phoenix will not stop attacking Ranma. Released after OVA 6.
Unlike the two previous films, despite having a theatrical release, this film is not feature-length, as it was released together in theatres with two other short films: Ghost Sweeper Mikami and Heisei Dog Stories: Bow. The length of this feature is comparable to the length of an OVA, and it was initially released on home media packaged with the other OVAs. However, like the first two feature films, it has a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio, rather than the 4:3 fullscreen aspect ratio of the OVAs. |
